In cooperation with SLDP / the Syrian Legal Development Programme, Justice for Life facilitated two meetings between the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons and a number of representatives of civil society organizations and activists in both Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.
The first meeting was held in Raqqa on 18 July 2026, while the second meeting was held in Deir ez-Zor on 20 July 2026, with the participation of approximately 30 participants.
The participants discussed the main challenges facing returnees from displacement, including the legal, social, security, and economic challenges that slow their return to a normal life. They also noted that thousands of families remain unable to return due to the absence of conducive conditions, such as difficulties in accessing adequate housing and employment opportunities, the extensive damage inflicted on the health and education sectors, as well as the ongoing environmental impacts affecting the governorates of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor and the rest of eastern Syria.
Justice for Life calls on the Syrian Transitional Government to continue expanding its cooperation with the United Nations Special Procedures and to facilitate additional visits to all areas of Syria without discrimination.
