About “Together to Lift the Siege of Deir Ezzor” campaign

A campaign launched by human rights advocates and media activists in March 2015 in response to the call of those besieged inside Deir Ezzor, where tens of thousands of civilians suffered from the dire siege. ISIS has imposed a suffocating siege on the city’s neighborhoods under the control of Syrian government forces, where Syrian authorities have blocked humanitarian access. The siege extended from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2017 within an area of no more than 4 square kilometers.
The campaign had two main objectives

  • Communicating with local and international media and human rights organizations, familiarizing them with the suffering in besieged neighborhoods and trying to shape a public opinion that presses towards providing means to help alleviate the suffering of the besieged.
  • Reaching out to the decision centres to push the international community represented by the United Nations through its mission in Damascus to pressure the Syrian authorities to facilitate the entry of food and medicine through Deir Ezzor airport.

For two years, the campaign communicated for with many radio stations, TV channels, websites, newspapers and research centers, where it was adopted by many media and research centers as a source of verified information. The campaign ended with the end of the siege.
